ITC Infotech is partnering NASSCOM in launching the first ever IT Workforce Development initiative in the Eastern Region. This initiative flags off with a 2-day summit in Kolkata on 12th–13th August 2005. Mr. Kiran Karnik, President, NASSCOM, will inaugurate the summit.

This initiative is the result of a joint effort by ITC Infotech and NASSCOM to identify the unique needs of the IT industry in terms of manpower, desired skill-sets, the quality of personnel for various disciplines and hierarchies.

The principal objectives of this initiative are to:

1. Strengthen Indian professional education (through improvements in curricula, faculty, infrastructure and pedagogy in line with the requirements of the IT industry.
2. Catalyse the interface between industry and academia through the organisation of specific workshops, summits, programmes and focused research.
3. Explore alliances and programmes for specific initiatives with corporate, academic associations and consultancy companies, with a special emphasis on what the IT industry can do.

To guide and implement this initiative, NASSCOM has constituted an Advisory Group that will consist of selected HR representatives of NASSCOM member companies, HR management firms and consultancy companies. This will involve multiple initiatives.

The first such engagement will be a Faculty development programme of teachers from 13 engineering colleges in the Eastern Region.
