The unsustainable pressure on land use makes creation of off-farm rural income and livelihoods an urgent task. ITC Sunehra Kal and BAIF are converting a farm family's
customary ownership of cattle into a profitable new livelihood.

MILK PRODUCTION & MARKETING

Catalysed by ITC, the formation of co-operative Milk Marketing Societies has connected these farmers to the milk route, and the community now supplies about 1,500 litres of milk per day - at higher than local prices - to Sudha Dairy in Bhagalpur.

CATTLE DEVELOPMENT

This breakthrough in marketing is backed by a cattle development programme that has given birth to over 1,800 cross-bred calves in this community, promising 7 to 8 times the yield of local breeds. Trained and equipped technicians provide artificial insemination for hybridising and pregnancy diagnosis, along with vaccinations, de-worming services and nutritional supplements for cattle.

As more families join the programme and as milk yields improve dramatically, the future holds an exponential increase in the community's milk production - and in their income from their cattle, reducing pressure on land as the primary source of livelihoods.
