With an ultimate objective to improve living conditions of rural communities by connecting them to clean energy, ITC has taken up a novel initiative in making Villages Positive in energy by installation of solar street lights. Over the last two years the company has reached over 60 villages in the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh delivering affordable and reliable solar powered LEDs to light up villages.
Solar LED street lighting provides a high quality, sustainable lighting solution for people in remote areas who don't have access to the conventional electricity grid. This solution extended villagers day after the sun has set at an affordable cost, increasing the level of safety on roads and streets and allowing for more economic and social activity. The street lights are powered by photovoltaic solar panels mounted on the lighting structure. The photovoltaic panels charge a rechargeable battery, which powers a LED lamp during the night. The automatic solar charge controller switch ON the LED lamps at dusk and switch OFF at dawn.
As this lighting solution does not consume any conventional energy, its carbon emissions during use are zero. The entire project is undertaken by ITC with a first step to push clean energy in rural India and making villages green in meeting their energy needs.
