ITC Susutainability Report 2006

This Repoprt is prepared in accordance with the G3 version (2006), of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Guidelines.

GRI, based in Netherlands, is an independent, global organisation, which develops and disseminates sustainability reporting guidelines.

GRI Guidelines are for voluntary use by organisations to report on economic, environment and social dimensions, GRI is the official collaborating centre of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

ITC's Report is at Application level ‘A+’, which denotes the highest level of reporting with independent external assurance.

UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs): The eight UN MDGs are: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, Achieve universal primary education, Promote gender equality and empower women, Reduce child mortality, Improve maternal health, Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, Ensure environmental sustainability, Develop global partnership for development.

Global warming/Climate Change: Global warming is the increase in temperature of the atmosphere due to greenhouse gases. Climate change denotes other changes in addition to rising temperatures.

Greenhouse Gases (GHGs): The gases that contribute to global warming. The 6 most significant GHGs are Carbon Dioxide (CO
2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), Hydroflurocarbons (HFCs), Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6).

Kyoto Protocol: An agreement made under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Countries that ratify this Protocol commit to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide and five other greenhouse gases, or engage in emission trading if they maintain or increase emissions of their gases. Kyoto Protocol covers over 160 countries globally and over 55% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

ISO 9001: An International standard for Quality Management System by International Organisationa for Standardisation (ISO). It is intended to help an organisation enhance customer satisfaction by meeting customer applicable regulatory requirements and to continually improve its performance in this regard.

IQRS: International Quality Rating System is a Business Excellence Model, developed by DNV, incorporating the Principles of European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) and Malcolm Baldridge criteria.

ISO 14001: An International standard for environmental management by International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). It is intended to help and organisation to continually improve its environmental performance.

OHSAS 18001: Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series. It is a specification intended to help an organisation eliminate/reduce occupational health and safety risks and continually improve OHS performance.

HACCP: Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system is developed by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations and the World Health Organisation on principles of Codex Alimentarius. The system helps analyse food processes, possible hazards and designates the critical control points.

SA 8000: An International Standard on Social Accountability developed by Social Accountability International (SAI) for socially responsible employment practices, covering child labour, forced labour, health and safety, freedom of association and collective bargaining, discrimination, disciplinary practices, working hours, compensation and management systems.
