Wasteland Development: Social Forestry

During 2010-11, 3,349 hectares were brought under social forestry plantations. The total area harvested during the year was 1,346 hectares, yielding a total of 30,281 tonnes of pulpwood, which was supplied entirely to ITC’s Paper Business. The total income earned by the farmers from pulpwood sales was Rs 545 lakh, amounting to a gross income of Rs 41,000 per hectare.

To date, the Social Forestry programme has created sustainable livelihood opportunities for 24,382 poor households by transforming 19,820 hectares of land into productive plantations. In addition, it has augmented the raw material base for our Paper Business, contributed to carbon sequestration and was also registered as a CDM project.

ITC’s Social and Farm Forestry programme has greened nearly 1,14,000 hectares of land.

 

Integrated Agriculture Development

 

These interventions aim to improve farm productivity and hence incomes, by promoting a package of efficient farm practices and technologies. During 2010-11, 46 group irrigation projects and 172 sprinkler systems were installed, 318 composting units were constructed and 1,190 demonstration plots were promoted, together covering 2,177 farmers. In addition, 554 hectares under IPM spices and MAPs were promoted during the year.
